Okay, picture this: me, slightly lost (as usual), phone battery dangerously low, wandering through the maze that is Aix-en-Provence. I'm supposed to meet a friend for coffee. "Just find Place François Villon," she texted. "Can't miss it!" Famous last words, right? Because guess what? I spent a good twenty minutes circling what looked suspiciously like the same fountain (there are a lot of fountains in Aix, just saying). Turns out, Place François Villon is... well, it's not quite what you expect.
So, what is Place François Villon, really?
Beyond the Tourist Trail
Let's be honest, when you think of Aix-en-Provence, you probably picture Cours Mirabeau, the magnificent tree-lined boulevard, or maybe some charming little squares overflowing with flowers. Place François Villon isn't exactly vying for the "Most Photogenic" award. Think more… functional. It's a roundabout. A very busy roundabout.
But hold on! Don't dismiss it just yet. Because even though it lacks the obvious charm of some of Aix's other spots, Place François Villon holds a certain significance.

- It's a hub: It's where several major roads converge, making it a key transportation point. Think of it as the slightly chaotic beating heart of Aix's road network.
- The naming: Named after the famous (and rather rebellious) French poet François Villon. Ironic, perhaps, given the roundabout’s rather mundane function. (Did Villon ever envision his name attached to traffic? Probably not).
- A "gateway": For many, it's the first thing they see when arriving in Aix. First impressions matter, right? Even if it's of… a roundabout.
The Villon Vibe (or Lack Thereof?)
Okay, I'll admit, "Villon Vibe" might be pushing it. You won't find artists sketching in the square (unless they're sketching traffic patterns, maybe?). There aren't any quaint cafes with checkered tablecloths spilling onto the sidewalk. Instead, you'll find… cars. Lots and lots of cars. Buses. Scooters. The constant hum of engine noise. Basically, organized chaos. But it's Aix's organized chaos!
Why Bother Then?
So, why am I even writing about a roundabout? Because sometimes, the most interesting things are hidden in plain sight. Place François Villon isn't about stunning views or historical monuments. It's about the everyday. It's about the constant movement, the flow of people and vehicles, the pulse of the city. It’s the real, unvarnished Aix. It's also a good place to practice your French driving skills (if you’re brave enough!).

Plus, and this is a big plus, once you navigate the roundabout, you're perfectly positioned to explore the real gems of Aix. Think of it as a launching pad. You conquer the Villon, then you conquer Aix!
And who knows? Maybe one day, I'll actually find that hidden charm I'm convinced is lurking beneath the surface of Place François Villon. Until then, I'll just keep circling (and maybe invest in a better map).
