Newer Super Mario Bros Ds

Ok, imagine this. I'm 10 years old, rocking some ridiculously oversized headphones (because, style) and crammed in the back of my mom's minivan on a road trip to, like, nowhere-ville. The only thing keeping me sane? My shiny new Nintendo DS and a copy of New Super Mario Bros. I mean, those were the days, right? No existential dread, just pure platforming joy.

But here's the thing: I've been revisiting some classic games lately, and New Super Mario Bros. for the DS really got me thinking. We tend to lump it together with all the "New" games, but… is it actually as good as we remember? Or is nostalgia playing tricks on us? C'est une question importante, non?

The Good Stuff

Let's be real, the core gameplay is solid. It's Mario, after all! The platforming feels tight, responsive, and the level design, for the most part, is pretty darn clever. They threw in some new power-ups like the Mega Mushroom (giant Mario smashing everything is always fun, let's admit it), and the Koopa Shell which… well, let's just say it had its moments. Remember trying to steer that thing? Hilarant!

The multiplayer was also a blast, especially for back-seat-of-the-car mayhem. Trying to sabotage your friend's progress while simultaneously collecting coins? Pure gold. Although, I think it caused a few sibling arguments along the way! Worth it.

The Not-So-Good Stuff

Here's where my rose-tinted glasses start to crack a little. The "New" aesthetic, while initially charming, gets pretty repetitive. Green pipes, checkered blocks, generic castles... it all kind of blurs together after a while. It felt like they were playing it safe, you know? Where's the creative spark of something like Super Mario World? Je me demande parfois.

And let's talk about the difficulty. Or lack thereof, at times. Sure, some of the levels were challenging, but the game throws so many extra lives at you that it's hard to feel truly threatened. That is, except for those darn towers with the shifting blocks... shivers

And don't even get me started on the boss fights. Bowser Jr. shows up way too many times. Seriously, couldn't they have come up with something a little more original? I mean, come on!

Final Verdict?

So, where does New Super Mario Bros. DS ultimately land? It's definitely not a bad game. It's fun, accessible, and a great introduction to the Mario universe. But, it's also not a masterpiece. It feels like a really solid foundation for what the "New" series would become, but it's missing that special something that makes a Mario game truly unforgettable.

Maybe it's the slightly generic level design, maybe it's the repetitive Bowser Jr. fights, or maybe it's just that I've grown up and my tastes have changed. But one thing's for sure: playing it again brought back a flood of memories. And sometimes, that's all that really matters.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go dust off my DS and try to beat that darn tower one more time. Wish me luck!
