Ah, la rentrée des classes! Remember that feeling? The fresh smell of new crayons, the slightly intimidating size of a brand new cahier… and the all-important, utterly critical: page de garde!
But today, we're not talking about just any page de garde. No, no. We're reminiscing about the page de garde – the one dedicated to ma maîtresse de CM1. Do you remember yours? What did it look like?
For me, it was a sacred undertaking. A blank canvas upon which to express not only my artistic talents (or lack thereof!), but also my respect and perhaps a tiny bit of nervous anticipation for the year ahead. Madame Dubois, my CM1 teacher, was a legend. Known for her firm-but-fair approach, and her passion for literature. We all wanted to impress her.
The pressure! Did you feel it too?
So, what makes a good page de garde for ma maîtresse? Well, first, the basics: her name, neatly written, ideally in calligraphy, or at least a valiant attempt at it. Mine always involved lots of loopy letters and maybe a questionable attempt at shading.

Then came the subject. "Cahier de… Français." Or maybe "Cahier de… Mathématiques". Always followed by "CM1" in bold, just in case Madame Dubois forgot which class she was teaching! And finally, the masterpiece, the pièce de résistance: the decoration.
This is where things got interesting. Some kids went for minimalist chic – a simple border of coloured pencils, perhaps a single, perfectly drawn flower. Others, like me, opted for maximalist mayhem. Think rainbows, glitter (if I could get away with it), and maybe even a meticulously crafted collage of magazine clippings vaguely related to school or, you know, butterflies. 🦋 Why butterflies? Don’t ask.
Did anyone else try to draw their teacher? Oh dear. The results were often… abstract, shall we say. I remember one boy, Pierre, drawing Madame Dubois with a halo and wings. He claimed she was an angel. She just smiled. A very tight smile.

Of course, the goal was to make it personal. To show Madame Dubois that you were a dedicated, artistic, and generally awesome student. (Even if you weren't. Shhh! It's the thought that counts!).
But really, thinking back, it wasn't just about impressing the teacher. It was about starting the year with a sense of ownership. This was my notebook. My work. My page de garde, imperfect as it may be. It was a little declaration of independence, a tiny flag planted on the fertile ground of a new school year.

And let's be honest, it was fun! A chance to unleash your creativity before the real work began. A final, glorious moment of carefree artistic expression before diving into conjugations and long division. Remember the feel of the crayons, the smell of the glue? Pure nostalgia!
Looking back, ma page de garde for ma maîtresse de CM1 wasn't just a piece of decorated paper. It was a little time capsule. A reminder of a simpler time, of the joy of learning, and the thrill of starting something new. A time when glitter was acceptable, artistic liberties were encouraged, and the biggest worry was whether your drawing of a butterfly looked realistic enough.
So, the next time you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed, take a moment to think back to those days. To the slightly crooked lines, the smudged colours, and the pure, unadulterated joy of creating something, just for your teacher. It might just bring a smile to your face. And maybe, just maybe, a little bit of that CM1 magic will return.
