Okay, picture this: you're scrolling through anime recommendations, desperate for something that isn't just another cookie-cutter isekai. And BAM! You see a thumbnail: A guy with dead eyes and a girl with a calculating smirk. Intriguing, right? That's how I stumbled into the chaotic world of Classroom of the Elite, or, as I like to call it, the Koenji show.
I say "Koenji show" because, let's be honest, that dude is the absolute MVP. Seriously, forget Ayanokoji, Koenji Rokusuke is the real enigma. You're probably thinking, "Wait, isn't Ayanokoji the main character? The emotionless mastermind?" Yeah, technically. But Koenji? He’s just... Koenji.
This is where the series gets interesting. Classroom of the Elite throws you into this seemingly idyllic high school, Advanced Nurturing High School, where the government promises top-notch education and guaranteed employment to its graduates. Sounds amazing, right? Too good to be true? You betcha!
There's a catch (of course there's a catch! Isn't there always?). The students are divided into classes A through D based on their merit. And Ayanokoji ends up in Class D, the so-called "defectives" class. The real game begins here.
Now, the story focuses on Ayanokoji's manipulative schemes to climb the ranks, using his classmates as pawns (or so it seems). He's supposed to be this tactical genius, always ten steps ahead. But then you have Koenji... who just does whatever he wants.

He’s supposed to be equally if not more intelligent than Ayanokoji, with ridiculous physical prowess and an ego the size of a small planet. But instead of playing the game, he's off flexing his muscles, napping, or pursuing his…unique definition of beauty. Honestly, what is up with that guy's obsession with his looks? It's both hilarious and slightly disturbing.
And the funny thing is, despite his apparent laziness and eccentricities, Koenji always seems to be in the know. He understands what's going on and effortlessly contributes when it suits him, often in the most unexpected ways. You can't help but wonder if he's secretly pulling all the strings from behind the scenes. Ayanokoji may be the puppet master, but is Koenji the one pulling his strings?

This is the real hook of Classroom of the Elite (at least, for me). It’s not just about Ayanokoji's plans, it's about the mystery surrounding Koenji. He’s a wildcard, an unpredictable element that adds a layer of intrigue that keeps you guessing. Is he an ally? An enemy? Or just a completely self-absorbed narcissist with hidden depths? We just don’t know!
Ultimately, Classroom of the Elite is a clever and engaging series. It's a psychological thriller dressed up as a high school drama. Sure, it has its flaws (some of the characters are a bit... two-dimensional). But if you're looking for something that'll make you think, question everything, and maybe even laugh a little, give it a try. And when you do, pay close attention to Koenji. He's the key to unlocking the true secrets of Advanced Nurturing High School (or at least, that's what I suspect! 😉).
Qui sait? Maybe Koenji knows the ending we're all searching for. He certainly acts like he does!
