Okay, so picture this: Me, glued to my 3DS, trying to beat Ultra Necrozma for the millionth time. My little cousin walks in, sees the screen, and goes, "Who's that weird glowing dragon thing? And why does that dude with the spiky hair look so... intense?" And it hit me: even beyond the Pokémon themselves, the characters in Sun and Moon (and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, naturally) are seriously memorable. Way more than just pixelated trainers, you know?
So, let's dive in, shall we? Get ready for some Alolan goodness!
The Protagonist: You! (But Let's Be Real...)
Technically, you are the main character. Customizable clothes, name, the whole shebang. But let's be honest, your character is more of a blank slate for the story to unfold. They're there to react to the actually interesting characters. No offense, of course! We still love you, anonymous trainer!
Lillie: More Than Just a Damsel in Distress
Ah, Lillie. Where do I even begin? At first glance, she seems like your typical shy, helpless companion. But trust me, Lillie is anything but typical. Her character arc is seriously one of the best in the entire franchise. Watching her grow from a timid girl terrified of Pokémon to a strong, independent trainer determined to protect her family (and Cosmog/Nebby!) is just... chef's kiss. Seriously, if you didn't shed a tear during her farewell, you might be a Pokémon yourself, devoid of human emotion! (Just kidding... mostly.)
Hau: The Energetic Best Friend
Hau! The happy-go-lucky rival who just wants to have fun and eat malasadas. He's the sunshine to your sometimes-serious journey. Some might find him a bit too cheerful, but I personally think he's a great foil to the darker elements of the story. Plus, his unwavering optimism is pretty darn contagious. Who doesn't love a friend who's always up for a battle and a snack? Maybe a bit too keen on battles after you've just gotten out of a tough trial... but hey, nobody's perfect!

Professor Kukui: The Laid-Back Researcher
Professor Kukui is the quintessential cool professor. He's passionate about Pokémon battles, constantly experimenting with new Z-Moves, and just generally radiating Alolan vibes. Also, he battles shirtless sometimes! Okay, a lot of the time. No complaints here, though. He's the type of professor you'd actually want to hang out with. Let's be honest, some of the other professors from other games are a little... stuffy. Am I right?
Team Skull: More Than Just Goons
Team Skull are the comical villains of the Alola region. Led by the surprisingly complex Guzma (more on him later!), they're less about world domination and more about causing general mayhem and stealing Pokémon (and sometimes just being plain annoying). But that's what makes them so endearing! They're not evil masterminds, just a bunch of misfits trying to find their place in the world. Plus, their goofy poses and ridiculous raps are endlessly entertaining. Seriously, who wouldn't want to be a Team Skull grunt? (Don't answer that.)

Guzma: The Broken Leader
Okay, Guzma. This guy is a complicated character. He seems like just another angry villain, but his backstory is genuinely tragic. A failed Trial Captain, rejected by the Island Challenge, he channels his pain and frustration into leading Team Skull. He's a broken soul who just wants to be accepted, and his interactions with Professor Kukui are heartbreaking. He's a villain you can actually sympathize with, which is rare in a Pokémon game. Major character development right here!
Ultimately, what makes Pokémon Sun and Moon so special is the connection you feel with the characters. They're not just sprites on a screen; they're flawed, relatable individuals with their own hopes, dreams, and struggles. And that's why, even years later, they're still stuck in my head (and my cousin's!).
